As a class we would take the first twenty minutes of class to write in Spanish. We knew basic words and doing this helped us understand those words even better, along with potentially teaching us new words. During this time we wrote whatever really came to mind, but we had to do our best to keep it in Spanish. We did this maybe five times. The paper on the left is from my first free write. The paper on the right is from my last free write.
I personally liked doing these free writes. It was a fun experimental way to grow and learn within the Spanish language. The first couple of times I did this, I wasn't bad but I felt like I was struggling a little bit. I was always trying to find ways to say different things in Spanish and I could never really figure it out. My first free write I wrote around 110 words. On my last one I wrote around 220 words. It wasn't until my later free writes that I felt like I had the hang of things. Even though I felt like I was struggling, that was okay. I was taking on a new language and I knew very very little of it. Looking back at it, I did a perfectly fine job on all my free writes. I'm actually glad that I felt like I was struggling. I think it pushed me. After that first free write, I pushed myself more. I became more involved in the stories we would do in class and even though I'm still not very comfortable speaking Spanish I do think I have come a LONG way from the beginning of the semester. |
